Natural, untreated Swiss ingredients.

«Through our own strict Magna Charta of Ingredients, we assure our customers that our HUG and DAR-VIDA products are made from natural ingredients, untreated as far as possible. The principles of this Magna Charta govern the use of ingredients in the assortment targeted for the retail industry, and for the restaurant, hotel, and catering industry.»

Andreas Hug: Managing Director, Co-Owner, Production Manager

Consumers have the right to know what goes into the foods they eat. And how the animals that provide our eggs, meat, and milk products are raised. Our Magna Charta of Ingredients regulates the source of eggs, the use of unsaturated vegetable oils, and forbids the use of preservatives or other additives. Besides, HUG does not use any genetically engineered ingredients.

Eggs from a healthy environment
The keeping of hens in cages was prohibited in Switzerland over ten years ago. Unfortunately this is not the case in some other countries. Therefore, it is still possible that legally imported eggs of such 'quality' end up in processed food products. HUG goes one step further: We want to know where and how the animals live, how they are kept and what they are fed. In our own products we therefore use only eggs from free-range hens which we buy from «Fischer Eier & Eierprodukte» an enterprise in our village. In due respect of our suppliers - the hens - we pay a higher price without charging it to the consumer.

Non-hydrogenated vegetable fats
The unsaturated fatty acids of vegetable oil are particularly beneficial to the human organism from a nutritional physiological viewpoint. Unfortunately these oils are not highly temperature resistent and therefore deteriorate fast during baking and storage. In addition, the handling of oils is considerably more difficult than the use of solid fat. The fat industry therefore started to harden oil, which thereby became easier to process, more temperature resistant and suitable for longer storage - but in the hardening process the unsaturated fatty acids and with them their beneficial properties are lost. For this reason, HUG only uses unhardened vegetable fats. These include the nutritional physiological and technological properties in an ideal combination.
HUG uses delicious Swiss butter to make its Guezli.

No preservatives
Preservatives inhibit the growth of  harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, mildew or yeast. Therefore preservatives are often added to extend the keeping quality of raw products, semi-finished and finished goods. In some consumers, however, these preservatives may cause allergic reactions - reason enough for HUG to leave out such substances.

A minimum of food additives
Additives are added to food to accomplish a certain function and to obtain a desired effect in the finished product. For example, no gingerbread could be baked without leavening agent (baking powder, baking soda etc.) - it would stay flat and compact and not have the usual airy consistency.
The use of additives is clearly regulated by the law: Whatever is not explicitly permitted is prohibited, and it is exactly defined which additives may be added to which food in what quantities.
It is, however, our endeavor to reduce additives to an absolute minimum.

Raw materials without genetically modified organisms (GMO)
Products with genetically modified organisms are not accepted by consumers. We share their reservations and comply with the demand for GMO-free food products. We are not using any genetically modified ingredients, additives or microorganisms in our products and procedures. As long as the procurement of GMO-free raw materials is feasible from a technological and economical viewpoint, we shall adhere to this principle.
